Stone types
We work with stone from Sweden, the Nordic region and the rest of Europe. Each rock type has its own character and uses. Here is a short overview.
Stone samples are available for every stone type.

Hard stone
- Granite: dense, hard and frost resistant. The first choice for streets, squares, kerbs, steps and walls in the Nordic climate.
- Gneiss: a metamorphic rock with a banded or flamed structure, used much like granite.
- Diabase: a fine-grained, black rock for paving, steps, facades and memorials.
- Basalt: a dark volcanic rock used for paving, facades and interiors.
Slate
- Quartzite slate: split along its natural layers, with a textured surface that gives good grip. Used for paving, walls, facades and floors, indoors and out.
The limestone group
- Limestone: a sedimentary rock with warm tones and often visible fossils, mainly for floors, walls, window sills and facades.
- Travertine: a limestone with characteristic pores, for floors, walls, bathrooms, terraces and steps.
- Sandstone: cemented sand grains, used for facades, steps, floors and restoration of historic buildings.
- Marble: limestone that has recrystallised under heat and pressure. Floors, stairs, bathrooms and facades.
Compare like with like
We compare stones within their group: hard stone, slate or the limestone group. For an ”or equivalent” specification, compare declared values from declarations of performance, tested to the same standard.
All our stone types, with images and technical values, are in our Swedish stone catalogue. In-depth guides are in our stone knowledge section (in Swedish).
